The 20MR Episode 87: Race Plans While Running with a Friend/listener email

Roland and Bert in downtown High Point just before a run
After some time away, it is really good to be back with you for this, Episode 87, of the podcast. Life has simply been so hectic of late, but I have been wanting to continue the show. Thanks for your patience...and continued encouragement relative to the podcast.

This episode has several things going on, not the least of which is a segment recorded while Bert and I ran through downtown High Point. We discussed upcoming race plans--hint: my plans have changed a bit--and talk about how fulfilling it is to have someone to run with. I must admit that I am enjoying having someone to hit the pavement with from time to time. I trust that you have such a person in your life as well.

Before the run, I give an update on how things have been going with the new job and other issues. We close things out with a couple of emails, including addressing a question about Chi Running. And Ian, please let me know how things go with you so we can share it with our listeners.

Be sure and give me a review at iTunes and share the podcast with all of your running friends. I trust that your summer has been a good one. Fall--and fall races--are just around the corner. And as always,

Thanks for sharing some of the road with me,

The 20 Minute Runner

The 20MR Episode 82: Updates, interview, listener emails

"Tigger" on my porch on a beautiful day

It is good to have you with me once again for another episode of the show, Episode 82. I apologize for the delay, but life has been so hectic. I know you can understand. Also, my recording equipment is giving me some problems. I may have to replace the mic or recorder itself. First, I have to diagnose the problem.

I hope to get more on a routine with the show...and the running. Things are beginning to settle down as we begin this show on my front porch, Tigger nearby. I update things with you on how life is going (hint: I'm changing jobs), share the interview with Coach Jeff at The Running Podcast and close things out with several emails from listeners. Thank you for sharing with  me! I thoroughly enjoy hearing from you, the listener.

So, sit back, or settle into your stride as we once again get on the road together. And as always,

Thanks for sharing some of the road with me,
The 20 Minute Runner

The 20MR Episode 80: Listener Emails, Goodbye to a Friend

Thanks for tuning in again for yet another installment of the show, Episode 80. Or if you are new to the podcast, thanks for coming along. Why not send me an email while it's on your mind?
This episode covers various topics and is a hodgepodge of sorts. We cover running and non-running items:

  • The Clinical Pastoral Care (CPE) update
  • The Tigger/Cola update
  • The weight update
  • The snow and ice update
  • Emails from Coach Jeff of The Running Podcast and Craig, a faithful listener
  • Impromptu discussion with my neighbor, Jason, at the end of the run
(Check out a video of a group Jason was in here).

I also devote several minutes to saying goodbye to one of the podcast world's best known (and loved) running podcaster, Nigel, of Running from the Reaper fame. No, Nigel has not gone to the great running trail in the sky, but is hanging up the mic indefinitely. Nigel, know that we will miss hearing you running on the towpath and hope to hear you in our ears again very soon. All the best and thank you again for keeping up Running Podasts.org and Channel Runner.org. Your help with promoting this--and other great running podcasts--is appreciated.

Also, check out a new website to our show, Bay Area Kicks (I will also include the link in the links section on this page). They give reviews on athletic apparel and shoes. Check 'em out; you'll be glad you did.

It's good to have you along. And as always,

Thanks for sharing some of the road with me,
The 20 Minute (chi) Runner

The 20MR Episode 46: Spring! Post marathon thoughts

Welcome to Spring and warm (hot?) weather. Episode 46 is about running in the newness of Spring and enjoying the weather. As I float down the highway, giddy with the smell of flowers, I do have a few thoughts about running and the days after the marathon as well. So, kick off your shoes, grab a lemonade and come along with me for this run.

If you checked out last week's blog, you know that there was a mix-up in who actually won the NC marathon. While the fastest person was disqualified, the eventual winner was rightfully reinstated--at least that's my opinion. Who knew that so much excitement could surround a small-town marathon. Be sure and check the photos scrolling to the left (blogspot page only). I will be adding more as they are sent to me in the days ahead.

Also, for the record, the final email confirmed that I did a bit better than I originally thought. Yes, the 4:05:31 still stands, but I actually ended up placing 64th of out of 302 marathon entrants and 49th out of 211 men. That means that I gained 130 places over the last half of the race, finishing with a 5 minute negative split. I am very pleased.

We have raised about $600 for The American Lung Association. I will keep the link live for a few more days to the left (blogspot page only) if you would like to contribute. If you do, would you send me an email letting me know? I do not need to know the amount, just your name so we can eventually get everyone's contribution included in the final tally. And thanks again for all of you who helped to continue the fight against lung cancer and other lung diseases. My father would be humbled--as I am--and proud.

My plans for the next few weeks are also discussed. I won't go into detail here, but hope to be well on the way to a 25 mile week soon.

The last segment of the show is about listener emails. Thank you to Suzane Smith, Matt at Run Digger Run, Bill Lynn and Coach Jeff Smith. Please follow the links here or to the left (blogspot page only). I appreciate all of the kind comments, and the emails in general.

Also, I encourage you to subscribe to the podcast with iTunes or your favorite podcatcher or feedreader. Send me your most recent race report/plans. Feel free to include a photo and short audio file if you would like. I will share the information on an upcoming episode.

Now, get out there and enjoy the weather! And as always,

Thanks for sharing some of the road with me,
The 20 Minute Runner

The 20MR Episode 29: Listener request: what I like and dislike, email responses

Episode 29 is mainly about you, the listener, though it also includes information about me--per your request. Go with me on the weekly long run as I talk about things that I like...and dislike. I am always a bit hesitant to share a lot about myself. I want this podcast to be about running...and life. However, as I promised ( and always will promise), I will respond to all of your emails, some of them during an episode of The 20 Minute Runner when the situation warrants. This is one of those episodes.

While I won't give details here, I do tell you a bit about myself on this run, especially my likes and dislikes. I try not to be too self-effacing, but do want to respond to your input. Again, I love listener email and honestly thank you for responding! Keep them coming.

MY LIKES (NOT exhaustive)
  1. Reading
  2. Writing
  3. Arithmetic (just kidding on that one)
  4. Community
  5. Serving others
  6. Animals
  7. Brussel Sprouts/Mexican/Chinese/Kraut (you get the picture...)
  8. My wife, actually I love her as well :)
  9. Podcasting, receiving listener email
  10. Photography
  11. Family
MY DISLIKES (NOT exhaustive)
  1. Arrogance
  2. Self-centeredness
  3. Being unable to run
  4. Having to deal with grieving families
  5. Rutabagas
We close by hearing a few more emails and sharing a recent race report from a listener, David. His report is also included on the "Listener Race Report" blog, see the link at the left.

As I type this, we are preparing for the Thanksgiving Holiday. I sincerely trust that yours is safe and enjoyable as you spend it with family and friends. Send me your likes, dislikes and what you are thankful for. I will share them in an upcoming episode. And, as always,

Thanks for sharing some of the road with me,
The 20 Minute Runner

T20MR Episode 19-Fall begins: Warren Rives 5K Race Director Interview, new features at the blog

Episode 19 begins with an interview with Alana Holyfield, the director of the Warren Rives Heart Strides 5K held each September in High Point. I appreciate Alana taking some time to share what the race benefits and some of the details about how it all comes together. Now in its 23rd running, the race is going strong. We plan to run the race on the 19th. Alana also agreed to help promote T20MR podcast even as we help her to promote the race. A good working relationship.

We discuss a first for me (at least in 30 years), a 30 mile week. We ended up covering almost 36 miles for the week, a record in my second age of running. While I thought the down week each month would not happen with the 1/2 marathon training schedule, in reality, the week coming will be short: about 15 miles. It will include, however, a tempo run and a race. After this light week, we will hit the ground hard leading up to the 1/2.

I also reflect on the long run. It is absolutely critical for any successful training program, whether your long run is 6, 8, or 15 miles: Make it happen! Speedwork also has its place as well. But like everything else, you must work into it gradually and give yourself time to get there. Do not grow impatient. Mark is just getting into the habit of exercise. Hear my advice to him about how long he should give himself. The advice applies to all of us, including yours truly.

Also, take a minute and explore a couple of new features on this blog page: the search bar and some issues I need your input on. Send me an email if you have thoughts about the issues I list. I will add to it as new things develop.

We close by discussing briefly the role of animals in our lives and how we need to slow down as we drive! Odie and I lost a neighborhood friend because someone simply drove too fast. May we all do our part to make the roads safe for humans...and animals alike.

This episode was a lot of fun putting together. I encourage your feedback and email. Let me hear from you! And, as always,

Thanks for sharing some of the road with me,
The 20 Minute Runner

Episode 12-Updates, Losses: how can we cope?

We begin Episode 12 with a discussion about what I have been reading lately. A hint: "Old Hickory." We also give information about sending a race photo and/or report. While I will post the pictures on this site, the race report will be posted on our sister site. You can find information by following the link at the left.

Also, we share an email from Doug in Springfield, Missouri. Doug shares about the loss of his brother several years ago and the loss of running a few months ago. That leads into our main topic. I discuss two issues relative to loss: loss of the ability to run for a season and how to cope with the loss of a loved one.

I offer some general ideas of how to get along when you are laid up from running and finish up by sharing some ideas that have been helpful to me as I have dealt with death in my family. I close by sharing a poem I wrote about my father's situation just before he died. While the episode is heavy, I trust it is helpful, all the while going 2 hours with me on this long run, about 13.7 miles. Remember, while this is a running podcast, it is just as much a podcast about life that happens to take place while we are running.

The pictures above are of my father and me several years ago and a photo I took of the crabapple in my front yard of some cardinals in the Spring. The tree--named "Sam", after my father--was a gift from some good friends a few weeks after my dad's death.

While this episode may seem a bit heavy, I thank Doug for planting the idea in my mind. We will lighten up next time. Promise! Thanks for listening, and as always,

Thanks for sharing some of the road with me,
The 20 Minute Runner
