The 20MR Episode 91: Twitter Shout Out! New format

Figs from my back yard

It's really great to have you along for this, Episode 91. During this nine-mile run, we talk about a recent trip to Virginia, and also hear from a couple of listener emails. One of the listeners is just getting into high school. It encourages me to know that some of our listeners are younger ones. We seem to cover the gamut...and I am honored to have you on board.

We also share the names and "what they are doing" from Twitter. If you have not connected with me on Twitter, why not take a minute and do it now. To all of you who follow on Twitter--or other ways--thank you! It truly is encouraging.

Finally, you will notice a change in the beginning and ending of the program. As much as I love Roger Subirana Mata's music, after so many openings and closings using his hypnotic piece, we fondly move on. I hope you like the more upbeat and contemporary music. Choosing a song called "Running" was a no-brainer. Drop me an email and let me know what you think. We may have a few more surprises as well in the days ahead.

So, thanks for sticking with the show--and me--so long. It has been a great ride and I hope to continue running together for many more episodes to come. But most of all, as always,

Thanks for sharing some of the road with me,

The 20 Minute Runner

The 20MR Episode 39: Slushfest, revisiting the caffeine controversy

We begin Episode 39 by running through knee-high snow drifts on the side of the road. Although the run was a bit shorter than normal, the workout was just as hard--maybe harder. We then move to a 12-miler later in the week. While it went well, I am actually experiencing knee and hamstring pain in my right leg. The pain is something I have never had before and I think it is telling my body to SLOW DOWN! If I can get back on the roads, I will purposefully go slower, except for the speedwork. I also really need to get in the last 2 long runs, 20 and 22 miles respectively before we hit the taper, something to which I am honestly looking forward to--the taper, I mean. Training for a marathon is very difficult and challenging, as you know. I simply need to run at a slower pace--unless the run calls for it or I am very comfortable to do so. Stay tuned...

After a visit to Big Ed's Chicken Pit in High Point, Cindy and I went bowling (could that be the source of my problem as well)? Not sure, but bowling is out until after the marathon. The episode concludes with the long run and discussion about a recent article I received in my In box. I would like to know your thoughts about what we discuss and your personal experience with caffeine.

Sprinkled in the middle of this episode are discussions on recent survey results (take the new survey at the blog if you have not done so already), how to order all of the music I use in the podcast, information on the Buckeye link to the left (of the blogspot page), and how to connect with me on Twitter, handle, "20minuterunner."

Also, we finally say goodbye to my Loco Perfecto Blues (seen above after their final, wet, run). They are now officially out to pasture...I'll miss them. But...life goes on. Now, to the new Saucony Glide 2s. Could the fact that the last two runs were in shoes with over 400 miles on them be the culprit to my injury woes? I'm not sure, but we can fix that with the Perfectos retirement.

Listen to how the article I referenced above has impacted my plans for caffeine use during the next two long runs and the marathon. I think I finally have settled on what I will do during those runs--and the marathon--relative to caffeine, electrolyte supplementation and the like.

Be sure to follow the links in this blog post to learn more about all of the things discussed. Hope your running is injury free and going well. And as always,

Thanks for sharing some of the road with me,
The 20 Minute Runner

Episode 35: Marathon basics, breakthrough training

Things have been quite cold lately--at least for central North Carolina. This run reiterates that fact: around freezing and quite breezy.

However, the training and planning for the marathon continue, whatever the weather may hold. On marathon day, missed runs and workouts will become clearly evident. In order for that to not happen, it is necessary to do the hard work in all types of weather and settings. Thanks for tagging along on this run in Episode 35.

We discuss training updates and talk about the basics of marathon training. While I have never run a marathon--this being my first--I hope you can benefit from my experience as we literally learn together. We cover a few issues in this episode, among them:

  • How to meet the electrolyte and nutritional needs that arise during long runs. I share with you what I am trying. Gels, almonds, raisins and Xtreme Beans are all a part of the discussion. I want to know what has worked for you on the long runs. Send me an email.
  • I also talk about the basics of any marathon training. While these things are not exhaustive, they must be an important part of training for 26.2 miles. Among them:
  1. The long run
  2. Speed work
  3. Cross-training
  4. Strengthening the core
  5. Rest (may be one of the most important aspects of long distance training)
  • I close by briefly sharing my observations on my training. After 17 months on the road, I seem to have clearly had a breakthrough (for me) relative to speed and strength. While the effort feels the same, the results are faster and stronger. If you have ever experienced this, I would like to hear about your experience. Our bodies truly are amazing creations.
As always, it's good to have you along with me. You can also follow my training on Twitter. My handle is "20minuterunner." Drop me a tweet and let me know you're listening. And as always,

Thanks for sharing some of the road with me,
